Own your career

What does career success mean to you? For most people it’s about getting to the top as fast as possible. For others it’s achieving your strongest professional self by pursuing roles and experiences that enrich you and enable you to give your best contribution. Whichever definition appeals to you it all starts with owning your career.
Here are some key steps;

BE 100% RESPONSIBLE: Accept that much of whatever happens with your career lies with you. Forge your path, pursue it with clear goals and the relevant skills sets. Choose to learn from your experiences and create a support structure to guide you along.

IDENTIFY YOUR SIGNATURE STRENGTHS : These are your strongest attributes and could be things such as people skills, your open-mindedness, technical ability. Look for roles that put you in your strengths zone so that you honour your potential and do your best work.

BE WILLING TO PAY YOUR DUES: Great careers don’t just happen. Develop a strong work ethic, a bias for positive action, high standards and the will to risk wisely. Staying in your comfort zone may have its merits but lasting self growth comes from stepping out

KEEP ADDING VALUE TO YOURSELF : The higher you rise, the more you’ll need to show what you are worth. Don’t bank on your job title or your status to hold you up. Invest in yourself, learn to lead and to leave things and people better than you find them

BUILD YOUR RESILIENCE: Even the best laid plans can hit a snag. When this happens there’s no use wasting time asking ‘why me’ or looking for someone to blame. Accept what you can’t control and aim to excel at what’s in your grasp.

DON'T JUSDT DO, BE: Professional success is built on character and competence. Become known as a person that can be trusted to act with integrity and commitment. A blind desire to succeed at all costs can lead you to walk over people- don’t go there!

GET RID OF EXCUSES: Life seems much easier when you blame someone for your woes. We’ve all done that and know that it gets you nowhere. When the going gets tough concentrate on the good bits no matter how small and keep going forward.

BE INTELLIGENTLY IMPATIENT: Your career is an important channel for your personal development and for influencing your environment. So don’t just coast along because your needs are met. Actively look for opportunities to make a difference more quickly

Now take action: What signature strengths will you drive your career forward with?
